It's been 25 years since Selena was tragically taken from us. I was interviewed a few weeks ago about how I became a fan and what she means to me. Although I talk about her often online I still feel like I can't express enough the impact she has had on my life and the inspiration I've gotten from her, she is like a muse guiding her fans! Here is the article that was published today.

Selena inspired some to learn Spanish, pursue professional dreams
For Marie Beland, Selena inspired her career.

As a teenager in the ’90s, Beland lived in northern California and worked at a Carl’s Jr. Surrounded by Spanish speakers, she picked up foreign words here and there.

She tuned into the Univision show “Control” one day in 1994 and saw Selena’s music video for “Amor Prohibido.” Beland liked the song, but this was before the internet boomed; Beland couldn’t just Google the young singer.

Then, in 1995, Beland arrived home from school to find her grandmother watching the news. Selena had been killed. The TV station showed a clip of the “Amor Prohibido” video, and Beland connected the dots.

In the following months, Beland cried whenever she heard Selena’s songs on the radio. She saw the 1997 movie starring Jennifer López, and Selena’s story inspired her.

Beland began collecting magazines featuring the singer. She got her first computer in 2000; with her discovery of eBay, her magazine collection grew. She began scanning the photos of Selena and uploading them to an MSN.com group for posterity. That group became so popular among MSN users that Beland created her own website. She used photo editing software to make Selena-themed desktop wallpapers.

Eventually, she realized she wanted to be a graphic designer.

“I used my love for Selena to practice my design skills, and anytime I could incorporate her into my school projects, I did,” said Beland, who is now 41 and lives in Atlanta, Georgia.

Selena was also one reason Beland decided to teach herself Spanish. Beland now speaks the language fluently and can sing along to Selena’s songs.

There was a lot to love about Selena, Beland said: her unique voice, her unforced sexuality, her ability to appeal to different generations and cultures.

“In another 20, 30 years, we’re still going to love her just as much as we do now,” Beland said. “She really touched people when she was around, and her fans have been passing that on to their kids. I don’t have kids yet, but hopefully, I will soon, and they’re going to know who she is.”

On February 27th via Facebook Mr. Quintanilla announced he completed the final chapter for a book he's been writing about Selena! He's said over the years during several interviews that he wanted to write a book because so many of them were written by people who never interviewed Selena, they didn't know her and weren't authorized. There are 2 books that aren't so much biographies but were written by people who did know Selena and recount their time with her but aren't full biographies. To Selena with Love, by her husband Chris Perez and Selena Su Vida Despues De Su Muerte by Cristina Castrellon. The first details Chris' life with Selena during their courtship and marriage, the second is by a woman who worked with Selena in Mexico, she was a reporter. This one was given a lot of negative press because she details seeing a psychic after Selena's death and details her experience and said she spoke to Selena. Her family doesn't believe in psychics so if you skip the last few chapters it's a great book, it details some behind the scene concert happenings and her personal relationship with Selena and how happy Selena was with her life but also the occasional setback. I personally am very excited to read Mr. Q's book! He was there for her whole life and I'm sure has some great stories that we might not have heard yet.

Here is the original text from Mr. Q's page along with the photo above that he posted. The book should be released later this year!

"Today I finally finished the last chapter of my book that I have been writing for the last few months Nancy De Los Santos was the ghost writer that helped me write the Book. Nancy was a co-producer on the "SELENA" movie and is from Los Angeles Ca. Since my daughter Selena died I was wanting to write a book. The public might not be aware that there are about 21 unauthorized books written about Selena and none of the writers ever interviewed Selena. And I feel that the most ugly book was written by Telemundo's Maria Celeste Ararras the woman for reasons which I can't understand took sides with the woman who killed Selena. My family and I and Chris Perez know exactly what happened, as l mentioned non of the writers or even Maria Celeste ever interviewed Selena. I will release the book later this year.

Tribute Concert

After 5 years of Fiesta de la Flor, people were excited to go to the annual event but due to some issues it was first going to be moved to another city instead of Selena's home town of Corpus Christi, then when it was announced it was canceled many fans were throwing a fit. A few months later Suzette announced a huge tribute concert in her honor a la Selena Vive.  Selena Veinte Cinco Anos is going to feature some famous artists in Latin music as well as some not so known artists. Pitbull, Los Tucanes de Tijuana & her brother's group A.B. Quintanilla y Los Kumbia Allstars. Her former backup singer Pete Estudillo is also going to be there!

Check out the official website for more details!

Mac cosmetics has teamed up with Suzette again to create a line in honor of Selena! The first one released in late 2016 and replenished in early 2017 due to high demand, was such a success that Suzette knew she wanted to work with Mac again to create another line. The first line was based on the colors in Selena's own makeup case. The new release is based on items that people use more often now such as highlighter. It's still keeping in the spirit of Selena's style but will be a different collection. Visit the official MAC website for more details!
